I live in McHenry County since 2009. I got a letter yesterday with the property tax marked up 24% comparing to the previous year. Quite scary.
Is that a normal practice here?

Keep in mind that all parts of McHenry county are not the same. Which township and what happened to the neighbors taxes with similar homes/lot sizes/etc.(?)

cheers

Oh more tax hikes from the state coming when a budget agreement is finally made.
Or you can sell your home cash out and leave the state while your home has value.
Don't know that I subscribe to the apocalypse theory, but I would expect property, sales and the state income tax to continue to rise in the future.

Algonquin township. My neighbors have about 6% mark-up.

Yup the state lived off of employee pension funds and now it is time to pay the piper!

Default OK, but....

....like I asked previously, are the neighbors homes of similar size and on similar lots(?) That's where the rubber hits the road

Look up your other immediate neighbors taxes here:
Find Your Tax Bill

My impression that in general, many northern IL unicorporated areas like Algonquin Twnshp are starting to jack up there taxes to catch up with other areas which receive more on average. They just don't have any other way to pay for what they need/want with the state obviously being SOL.

Sorry, similar lots, buildings also similar.
How do I handle that: ask the county for explanation? It seems to be the first step.

There is likely a very defined procedure indicated by your township. I suggest you start on their website with the assessor's office.

I'm in Algonquin Twsp since 1991, mine went down $250.... yahoo!

Too late to fight this year's bill but next year when you get your assessment Fight It! You have a 30 day window to do so. Follow the instructions in the assessment notice.

That would mean the OP would actually have to *read* the entire assessment info in the mail(!) LOL

cheers
