We went to IL this weekend house hunting in Barrington, St. Charles and Geneva. We saw many beautiful homes. Our realtor told us to consider Cary but I don't know anything about it. Is it nice? Schools? Crime rate?

Thanks!

Its nice, certainly the area in Cary known as "Trout Valley" is nicest. Older 'hoods and sub divisions, small 'downtown', schools are good, crime, none to speak of.. It certainly is not AS nice as Geneva/St Charles or Barrington.

Cary used to be a little town but has really boomed and become modernized . Fair amount of new construction , close to major roads, Crystal Lake is nearby for better shopping. Cary is known for its aweful School Bus/Train accident some years back and theres a memorial at the scene .

Cary is a nice town and I like the fact that it is on a train line, though it is a longer ride to Chicago than I would like, even if that is not factor now (as you husband will be driving to Hoffman Estates) it is something that can be an indication of how property values will react to the continued pressure on gasoline prices and commute costs.

I am pretty sure that the hit from McHenry Co taxes is higher than in towns in Lake Co..

I think the median home value is/was well below $700K, but that is reflecting the "pre-existing" homes and may be changing. Still, if you are the kind of person that worries about shouldering a bigger portion of taxes it may be something to keep in mind.

If you have been to Barrington and Schaumburg I think it is fair to say that right now the Cary development pattern is still leaning toward the "farmland into strip mall" of the later instead of the "estates" of the former...

I am aware of the horrid school bus/train accident on rt 14 in Fox River Grove, not Cary,, memorials are at the scene still..
