Many older homes had bedrooms which had no closet or a very small one. Armoires were very popular once, an people really had less clothing before the invention of the washing machine and dryer. In many older homes you can see how closets were added at a later date (wall of shallow closets with cupboards overhead is quite common). It just goes with the territory if you like older homes. Be prepared to sacrifice a bedroom in order to get that walk-in closet .

In new construction however, good closets are a must. I can't imagine anyone buying a new house which had a bedroom without a closet.

I imagine the issue of inspection varies by village/city, but practically speaking who would be interested in a bedroom w/o closets?

ETA - whats really funny is when home sellers try to pass off a sewing/linen closet as a room (I've seen it). Think 6 x6 room, small window. One house I looked at had it set up with a crib - a twin bed would never have fit in there.

I've lived in 8+ apartments and only one of them had a closet in the bedroom (but they were all turn of the century housing stock). My current apartment (built in 1875, thankfully updated since then) has three closets, none of which are in the bedroom.
