Perhaps, they should rename the award as best towns over 50,000 people for middle to lower middle class families.

I have an office in Des Plaines and while it is okay, it ain't great. They have way way overbuilt the downtown condos, with a flood of more on the way. It is a nice town, there are certainly many that are worse, but it is just okay. The housing stock is decent, but not great and it is very close to O'Hare.

I think Mt. Prospect has a quaint downtown, but it is just a smaller version of Arlington Heights, nothing to get excited about. I am a big fan of the Continental Bakery.

Palatine is an okay town, but again nothing to get excited about. Some of the crappier parts near downtown have been torn down to make way for new condo buildings. I really like what they have done with the downtown near the train station. The townhomes on NW HWY near Quintin are pretty nice (I financed some of these developments). The high school is pretty good too.

Steve-O,

Perhaps these are not better places to raise kids than Naperville, but are good places to raise kids if you cannot afford or choose not to live in an area like Naperville.

I was raised 50-50 Naperville/Oak Park. If I were able to do it again I'd choose Oak Park for my whole childhood. If I still lived in the Chicago area I'd raise my daughter in Oak Park. Naperville is nice, but it's a bit too sterile.

Not to mention ridiculous and neverending jet engine roar.
