My wife and I are going to move in an apt on Harrison and S. Cuyler street in Oak park. Is that a safe neighborhood? I was told the west of Ridgeland is much better the east. S. Cuyler is just one-block (maybe half a block) east to Ridgeland. Is that still a nice and safe area?
Thank you !

It's about as safe as any area in Oak Park. Overall, Oak Park crime stats are comparable to gentrified areas of Chicago like Lincoln Park. Here are the official crime statistics for Oak Park.

Oak Park, Illinois Village Departments -- Police Department

The "west of Ridgeland" advice is WAY too general. I've noticed that the area east of Ridgeland but south of Madison actually has less criminal activity than many areas west of Ridgeland. I would guess that Columbus (?) Park has something to do with that, since it provides a bit of a buffer from some rough West Side neighborhoods.

Is "The Island" south of the Eisenhower and east of Austin Blvd. still White?

No. It's pretty much like the rest of Austin (Galewood excepted.)

It's a nice area near some restaurants in the Harrison Arts District. You will enjoy Trattoria 212 and Buzz Cafe, all in walking distance.

There used to be a good pizza place on Harrison called Mike's. But that was in the 60s, before that was an "art district". Unless you counted the blueprint shop over there.

In the day, the ignorant would tell you to basically avoid 3/4 of Oak Park -- anything east of Ridgeland and anything south of I-290. That rule doesn't apply anymore, though the closer you get to Austin, the more likely you are to be the victim of "spillover" crime. Harrison St./Cuyler is just fine. I would treat it as an urban area though and act accordingly.

That was excellent advice, it kept you clear of a certain unruly and violent Irish clan and their retainers that lived in that part of Oak Park.

Not to mention Ozzie Guillen who lived in Berwyn!
