Places like Phoneix, ABQ, Tuscon, Flagstaff, etc. you can drive for a few minutes and be out in open land where doing many things is possible. i.e. shooting and other stuff
Gotcha. There no where near as much government owned land around here as in the Southwest, so it's a very different thing.

Not exactly within the scope of this thread but since you posted this in the city of Chicago forum and not the suburbs I think its appropriate.

There are far out places within city limits that feel rural and undeveloped. The area in particular I am talking about is the Lake Calumet area and some areas surrounding Hegewisch. Take a drive on Stony Island Avenue south of 103rd Street all the way to the Calumet River bank and you won't see a single house in a three mile stretch and need I remind you this is all within Chicago city limits! After viewing the Calumet riverbank turn around and then make a right on 122nd street to Torrence Avenue and you will see more vacant land. This whole area is all wetlands with some industrial waste sites scattered and just lots of open land. I took a picture once where 122nd street meets some railroad tracks east of Stony Island and it was a field of cattails as high as cornfields. Just looking at that sight you would swear you were in downstate Illinois or something but I had to remind myself I was still in the city. That whole area is very surreal and virtually unknown to people not living in that area but if someone wants to view areas that remind them of the country without going far its quite interesting.

The land along interstates is usually developed first. So what you see from the interstate does not really give an accurate picture of the cornfield-ness of an area.

Trust me. You never want to know exactly.

Illinois is a very corny state. Not as corny as Iowa, though.
