Hi,

I just moved to the Lakeview area. I'm a single mid-20's professional male. I've heard of sites like meetup.com for meeting new people. How do other 20-somethings meet in this area? I'm not a big bar person unless I'm going with someone I know. I'm not opposed to going in to have a drink and relax though. What's a good way to meet new people here?

Thanks!

Yelp events can be fun.

Taking a community, non-academic class is a good way, too. If you like photography, there's a photo center on Lincoln near School that offers classes. Or if you're an expert in something people might be interested in, you could teach a class in it through the Discovery Center.

You could volunteer at the Center on Halsted or Howard Brown (clinic or resale shops). (those are all gay-centric, so if you're not gay and looking to meet ladies that might not be your best bet).

You could get involved with the local Alderman's office. It helps if you're politically minded and support him (or her), but even if you're not they often take volunteers to help with events where you'd meet a lot of people.

If you're okay striking up converstations with strangers but aren't into bars, I've found restaurants with lounges/bars in them are decent for meeting people.

I joined a kickball team through meetup.org and it was fun. Everyone was in their 20s and it was a good way to meet people without a lot of awkward silences and all that. I definitely like the more active ways of meeting people as opposed to randomly in a bar. If you want to meet women, take a metalworking class a Lillstreet Arts Center, you'll probably be the only guy there and it's a lot of fun (you get to play with fire, ha).

Meetup and MeetIn are both good organizations, I met some cool people through those.

Do you have a dog? Take 'em out for walks and it seems like you meet someone new every day.
