Hi,
Is Craigslist still the best place to look for apartments under $1000. It seems filled more and more with fake, and rent to own ads. Before Craigslist I found the Reader to be the best; the Tribune and Sun Times didn't have much in them at all. Then Craigslist seemed to have the best and largest archive. Soon Craigslist over took it. In the last year Craigslist has turned more and more into mostly rent to own, and spam. Are landlords leaving Craigslist for another Classified, or is Craigslist still the only game in town.
Thanks

I just read an article yesterday about ebay's classified ads. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to them but just google ebay classified and you will find them.

I've found that Facebook Marketplace is very similar to Craigslist and it seems like less crap is posted because each ad is linked to a Facebook user. It really helped my sublet search. Maybe it'll be a good apartment resource as well.

Check out domu.com for Chicago apartments. Not sure how good it is - I've only perused it once or twice, but I know people who have used it to find their current apartment.

Where are you looking? I snoop around Craigslist all the time and there are plenty of apartments for rent under $1,000 listed. Do you have an example of what you're encountering specifically?

All i know is, I signed up for roomates.com and it is nothing but spam. They make you pay money to see a "message" someone sent you... but I'm pretty sure it is some automated statement sent out by the website to people to scam.

Craigslist is still your best bet. Or some neighborhoods have renting offices that help you (I saw one in Lincoln Park and probably in other villages/areas).

I used roommates.com a few years ago to find college roommates and yeah I agree, it wasn't the best service. I luckily only paid for the 3 day service which was only like $3. It does give you a lot of spam and a lot of the people who will contact you don't seem to be the kind of people you'd probably want to live with. Three different men around 30 to 45 contacted me and I was 19 at the time haha.

The Chicago Reader is also a good place to look.
