Whatever you do, avoid biking to Englewood. Drive a vehicle.

Isn't Medford where that the expensive "fruit of the month club" grows their huge pears?

Chicago has no orchards. The Englewood neighborhood is among the highest incidence of violence in the country. If you are used to peaceful college town this is about as far away as possible.

I would plan on living in a much safer area and put aside thoughts of bicycling unless you switch jobs to a better area.

If Hyde Park is too expensive I would look to someplace like Garfield Ridge or Brighton park on the SW side -- commute is not great, but safety is much better. If you want a more active nightlife maybe South Loop.

I am sorta shocked that anyone would accept a job over the phone all across the county, especially when the ability to be successful is going to be dependent on their ability to have some sense of the kind of students the school has. Please, for both safety and success of your career, get here far before the term starts. Prepare for what you are facing. Medford is nothing like Englewood ...

I wouldn't say that. If you want to get to Kennedy-King from Hyde Park, take the Garfield bus (#55) to Halsted then transfer to the Halsted bus south from 55th st. to 63rd st. Length of trip is about three miles. Its 45" tops; less in rush hour.

Well, I used to bike to and from the Garfield red line station from Hyde Park. The view isn't the best and there's no bike lanes, but it ain't bad.

Students? Kennedy-King is an inner-city community college. So, its not high school kids marking time until they can drop out.

You are right. It is kids marking up time to collect Pell grants and other student aid to buy cars with and party with. Then they drop out.

Really? There are descent places near both sites( Kennedy King coll. and St. Bernard Hospital) that will suffice and reasonable to rent. There is crime in the suburbs .Just act your age , respect those around you and they will do the same. In time you can move if you so desire.
