I'm talking about non-existing springs: yeah, once in every 4 or 5 years you have a nice spring but usually springs here are mostly in the 40's and low 50's with grey depressing skies. Sure, even in cold springs you may have some 80 degree days, but they're just an handful well until the second half of May or beginning of June. Like this year: April had temperatures in the 30's and 40's almost every day; the first half of May wasn't much better with temperatures in the 40's and low 50's. Now, native Chicagoans will go any distance to say that this is not true and blah blah blah! Don't believe them because they don't know any better. If you like South Florida weather, you'll hate this weather here. Period!

The people are also not that friendly: yeah, they may be friendly as a facade but they don't really want to be your friends. You won't notice this right away, but you'll learn this soon enough. People here are as cold as the weather.

The grey all around is also very depressing: the midwest is just a flat wasteland. Sure, the architecture in Chicago is spectacular and the lakefront is pretty cool in summer but in the remaining 9 or 10 month is just depressing grey landscape.

You know, every one has their own preferences and like different things. Chicago can be a great city, it is just not for me I guess.

Good luck. If you do move here, check in with me after a year or so...
If it's so bad then why are you here?

Lovegun is an example of friendly Chicagoans!

I'm stuck here because I bought a condo 3 years ago that now has lost 20% of its value!

Were you happy in Chicago when you bought the condo? If not, why'd you buy it? If you were happy at the time, what changed?

I don't find Chicagoans particularly friendly either, but I don't mind, because I'm not friendly myself...maybe because I was born here

Purchasing real estate without long term intentions was always advised against. It's amazing how little common sense buyers exhibited during the 05-09 period.

I always look at people like gabry and wish they'd realize that while they hate the weather and think it's horrible, everyone's likes and dislikes are completely different. I've found the one thing that people get obsessive about on Chicago is the weather. They move from the south and hate the winters, and then that's all they can see or focus on. They don't understand that you can't do anything about the weather, and as weird as it might be for them to understand - many other people just don't care that much that it's cold in the winter, they may even like it, but if you HATE it - you should leave.

I made the opposite move a few years ago....decided i was sick of chicago winters so moved to Sarasota. Didn't last 2 years! lol. Learned I prefer chicago winters to FL summers FL is great to visit but I much prefer Chicago. grew up in the burbs, but lived in the city for 10years, and much prefer that.
chi-town is a great place to live! i have several friends that moved here from the south (one from Ft Lauderdale) and they have all loved living up here. And all made many friends- never heard anyone complaining we were "cold". i think you'll find those folks in any city!
needless to say, go for it! But i do recommend you find a job first. the market's tough everywhere these days.
