There are a lot of parking lots that will have you towed if you park there and try to go to some other business. I was thinking, it seems very possible to mistakenly tow someone who is actually inside the business that owns the lot.

Have you ever heard of this happening? If it did happen, would you still be on the hook for the towing fees?

Nearly happened to me. I was parked in a no parking from 7-9am for whatever reason. Parked at 9:05 and was crossing the street when a city tow truck driver hooked my car. Before he could pull out with my my car I opened the door and got in the drivers seat and kept flashing 9 with my fingers at him. He finally unhooked me and I drove off. I'd like to have seen him pull off with me inside I'd be on a phone with a lawyer all the way to the impound lot.

I'm not sure what is worse the criminals or the city officials themselves.

As for towing fees once they have you car hostage you will have to pay up and will never get your money back no matter what.

One of my cop friends said in Chicago that if you are present and tell the towing guys to scram and they still take your car it becomes auto theft. I am not sure if that is correct.

If you get towed, whether it was legit or not, I can virtually guarantee you're not getting your car back until you pay. You might be able to contest it after you pay, but good luck.
The private towing companies are perhaps the worst possible business you would have to deal with as a consumer.

It doesn't happen as often as one would think. Most businesses have private tow companies who have "spotters" that sit in the lot and wait for people to leave the lot. I see this happen a lot downtown, or huge events where their is limited parking.

They'd better because if you wrongfully tow a customer, then that person will not only never do business with you again he/she will do everything to make sure others don't either.
