Just noticed the boxscore attendance for the past two nights @ US Cellular for White Sox vs. Cubs. Mon. had 36,005 and Tues. attracted just over 35,000. Doesn't the park have a capacity of 39,000-40,000+?

I realize these are weeknight games, and the Sox would normally have 18,000-22,000 on many of these weeknight games, but shouldn't these be sellouts the day tix go on sale in the off-season?

Is Chicago not/no longer the solid baseball town it's been deemed? Has inter-league play's allure faded?

Even the Cubs no longer sell out every game, according to my glances at the boxscores. SOme games have had as low as only 31,000.

Maybe it's the economy and mediocre teams?

Have the Bulls & Blackhawks stolen the thunder the past two springs, making it difficult to get the baseball fanbases excited?

Bingo.

Another thing is that the teams now play each other so often it's no longer a big deal.

No body likes a loser. There is a reason when the Yanks come to town, Wrigley and the Cell fill up. People want to see history, they want to see the stars, stuff that is not found on either Chicago team.

It's cause the teams both suck, it's a monday and tuesday night, and the fact there were tornado warnings everywhere last night made many people decide not to go get day-of-game tickets or just avoid it altogether.

My friend lives in Bridgeport and was out by herself eating dinner and having some drinks. She said she started to get creeped out because she had three strangers walk up and offer her free tix to the game last night in about an hour.

Not holding much hope for the Cubs, but the White Sox still have a chance to make some noise; Paulie is hot--a home run in each of the last 5 games...

Attendance "issues" probably due to weekday night game, intracity rival ticket prices, lackluster performances...who knows, really?

You want to know why the games aren't sold out?

Check the ticket prices. They've increased the prices for these interleague series every year. And I'm not paying playoff prices to see two sub-500 teams, especially since the new, shiney feel of interleague play has worn off.

I bought tickets off a scalper for the ALCS game in 2005 for $100 bucks. Upper deck seats for a mid-week series against the Cubs 6 years later should not be $80 (plus fees!). Well they can be, but don't be surprised to see empty seats.

Isn't attendance at baseball down around the country?
