There have been more than just that one attack. And it's not just violent crime, but quite a few "nuisance" issues, as well. Also, I'm becoming concerned about the increasing number of empty storefronts in the area.

Yep, it's called a bad economy. Chicago isn't the only place experiencing this.

Personally, live where you want to OP. Most people on here will rehash the same 3 to 5 neighborhoods that are perfect for renting, but may be difficult to purchase depending on your circumstance. If you are waiting on the absolute bottom of the market to purchase, than continue to wait. If you are truly tired of renting test the waters. A good realty website, Google street view and Everyblock can provide a peek without the hassle.
