The Loop (aka downtown) is near Grant Park.

You want to be closer to the action? Don't stay there.

Stay north of the river and west of Michigan. Sofitel, House of Blues hotel, you'll have many choices.

Actually east or west of Michigan doesn't really make too much difference, but I think you'd be better off looking north of the river, near Michigan Avenue, lots of bars & restaurants & shopping. The museums you may need to jump in a cab, or walk, but it's like a 2 mile walk.

KMG1. I would suggest you stay in one of the hotels on or off North Michigan Avenue (from 500 N. up to 900 N.). Their are many hotel on this "Mag. Mile" and the surrounding blocks. You can still walk down to the Loop/Grant Park (or take a cab/bus in 10 minutes). You will be closer to more restaurants and nightlife if you are north of the Chicago River.

Have a good trip

Grant Park is in the loop, and yes these hotels are "OK." They are someof the nicest hotels you will ever come across.

KMG1. Yes. The hotels on and off N. Michigan tend to be very good for the most part (up to and including 4 and 5 stars such as the Four Seasons). One way to get a good deal is to check prices on expedia, orbitz, travelocity, etc. and then go to priceline's "name your own price" feature and put in a bid undercutting the lowest prices you found elsewhere. You can't select the number of beds nor the specific hotel when using pricelines name your own price option, however, you can select the "zone" of the city and the "star category" of the hotel. And Mag Mile./N Michigan is one of the categories you can choose from when making a bid. I've used this feature many times and gotten incredible deals in that area.
