Hi all, we're getting married at the City Hall soon, and I can't figure out how it works with witnesses here in Chicago. By witness I mean a special person who will have to sign somewhere and show an ID for example, not just the persons you bring with you to the City Hall. I know that witnesses are not required in Chicago, but what if you want some? Also, can you exchange wedding rings during the ceremony?

The Cook County Clerk's office performs the marriage in Chicago, not the city. You might want to ask them.

Why don't people google these things? I found this in 8 seconds:

Marriage and Civil Union Court

Do I need a witness or witnesses for the ceremony?

No, witnesses are not necessary. However, you may bring up to 15 guests to view your ceremony. Couples joined at the Cultural Center may only bring 20 guests due to time constraints.

As someone who's gone through the process, I can say definitely yes.
