Poor maintenance, poor quality of life for tenants, and high criminal activity is what brought a lot of the high rise projects down. And then you have these massive empty lots like you see along State street near Comiskey, so I guess it's better to fill them with condos instead of just leaving them vacant.

Isn't the answer pretty simple (not discussing the social aspect here just the economic). Tear down what costs taxes and revenue and build buildings that will generate taxes and revenue. Let's says you owned a house and you could either A) let people live there rent free, you pay all the utilities and you also had to cook them dinner every night or B) sell your house for a profit or have it be rented and you get paid. Would you rather have A or B?

Simple - a federal court order to do so and the fact that the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development started managing public housing in the mid 90's.

sociological studies says the concentration of poor/uneducated actually creates higher crime...that is why. there is a certain threshold of poor that makes it a lot better.

We demolished the public housing highrises because they were such a roaring success at eliminating the crushing alienation and poverty that was erstwhile endemic in the black community, and we realized their meteoric rise up the economic latter was threatening white hegemony. So we tore 'em down to keep the brotha down.

After the show the PJ's came out, black tv shows were at an all time high. We knew they could not make any more cartoon sitcoms based on that gimmick so we had to take them down.

They torn them down because they became crime ridden and unlivable and police couldn't do anything about it. Google chicago public housing to read some of the horror stories.

They demolish them because they are in otherwie expensive areas with a lot of potential
but then Sector 8 buildings appear elswhere and drive whole previously healthy neighborhoods down and turn them into slums
