I've just moved to Chicago this year. We live out in the 'burbs but I work in the loop. I've got a decent hike from the office to Ogilvie every day, but to the extent that I can modify my route and take in some some lights/seasonal displays, I'd love to do so.

Also, my husband and I are planning a day of hooky in early December (while kids are in daycare) for some Christmas shopping and a nice leisurely lunch together. We were thinking of the N. Clybourn area for that day, but other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My favorite is strolling State Street in the Loop and North Michigan Avenue. Also, lunch at the Walnut Room inside Marshall Fields, now Macy's on State St (but the wait can be very long...get there the minute the doors open).

Skip N. Clybourn and do State/Michigan instead.

Ditto. That area is loaded with strip malls and is very pedestrian unfriendly.

This,
There's almost nothing tastier that a freshly grilled brat at the Christkindlmarket, except maybe the beer you purchase to wash it down. Plus the giant tree is magnificent.

I actually liked North/Clybourn pretty well, but during the holidays it was an insane cluster. But we'd always take the North Ave bus right over since we lived essentially at six corners, and it was pretty convenient to have such nearby big-box shopping. But at the holidays, even though it will be busy, I vastly prefer Michigan Avenue. It's so pretty!

I second the Christkindlemarkt. It is a really unique thing and the smell of cooking sausage, potato pancakes and sauerkraut will drive you crazy. Yum.

The Christkindlmarkt is so much fun! Especially if you know German it's fun to talk with the people running the booths, a lot of them come annually for the event! A year or two ago I was wearing my Bayern Muenchen scarf and one of the guys noticed it and we got into a discussion on where he's from and the Bundesliga.
