I just got to Chicago and have found an aparment between N Ashland and N Damen, on W Maypole & N Wolcott to be precise, my research here leads me to think that its not as bad an area as EGP but it is not the West Loop either, so its not either the safest or the worst of places.

When I went to see the property I liked it a lot, the impression I got from the adjacent area is that there is a lot of new buildings, I didnt saw any shady elements went I went to initially and neither see anything out of the ordinary while doing a follow up visit at night time around the same area.

If anyone can give me their opinions about that specific area I would really appreciated.

It's not bad.

And since when is the west loop the barometer of safety in Chicago?

That was not what I was trying to imply...although I can see why you took it that way...

I was just at the Goodwill @ Racine and Washington (3 blocks away from where you're asking about) and was commenting to my wife how good this neighborhood was looking. If I had a job in the loop, it would definitely be on my list.

It's not an area, intersection, I would choose to live. Still an area for "pioneers." Have you walked the neighborhood at 10 p.m. weekdays or overnight on the weekend? Or just visited during daylight hours?

Yea. I wouldn't personally live there. Although it isn't too bad considering what you could find in Chicago. If you can find a similar place further north on Damen I would recommend that. Maybe in Ukrainian Village or Wickerpark/Bucktown.

I met the agent for showing like around 5pm this past Saturday... And then did another visit that same night like around 9pm and didn't saw anything that would lead me to believe that is a really bad area. I like it because it would really close to my job plus I'm not really looking for nightlife or any of that stuff since I'm pretty much a "home to work/ work to home"' type of person and sometimes I can do work from home.. I have a car also and I dont see myself using public transportation either, unless is absolutely necessary.

Thank you all for your inputs!!

What's the 'safety line' of delineation over there, then? East of Ogden?

I wouldn't feel safe, south of Lake is not good. Find someplace north of there, around Grand or Chicago.

If you're going to live as though you were in the suburbs (and it sounds like that's indeed what you want), then it's probably fine. Walking safety isn't important if all you ever do is drive to and from your place to other destinations. Personally I wouldn't live there if you paid me, because there's nothing around there worth walking to, but that's not a safety issues it's a lifestyle issue.
