Hello, I am currently looking into apartments/houses to buy in Chicago. I found one near Sacramento Blvd and Franklin Blvd. Since I'm not familiar with Chicago, I wanted to ask your opinion about the area (I believe it's East Garfield Park). Thanks!

East Garfield Park is okay. West Garfield Park, on the other hand...

It's not far from downtown (if you'll be working in downtown), so it's convenient.

Sacramento and Franklin is Humboldt Park, not East Garfield Park. Either way I'd stay away from either area. Crime infested and desolate.

Thanks, but I'm not sure who to believe - irvpakrez11 or tomcho.

I also found one near Prairie Ave and 37th St - is that area any good?

You should make the quick trip up to Chicago yourself. If you're seriously thinking about buying real estate in marginal to terrible neighborhoods in Chicago, you need to see for yourself what a marginal to terrible neighborhood in Chicago means.

If you can't tell whether to believe tomcho or irvingpark, you have no business buying anything in this city.

The stay might be a little expensive. I want to know which houses I definitely would like to see and buy one when I arrive. I think it would be a waste of money if I go there and come back without a house.

If that's the case, you're not ready to buy a house in Chicago - or most anywhere for that matter.

If you need to move here, I would recommend the concept of renting.

I would rather buy a house now (or an apartment), then move in and work. Are there any rent-to-own houses in the city?

How about 53rd St and Michigan Ave? Is that area any good?
