this will eventually break chicago, as would it any city.
the change in policy should already be noticable. PD dodge violence instead of confronting it. that makes sense. so often those who sue the police are the ones with called them. games people play.

Neither of these cases were brought about due to any "violence" encountered by the CPD. These were completely preventable situations, caused by cops who just didn't give a damn about anyone. Everyone they see is a "perp." No empathy.

These borderline psychopaths need to be weeded out of the force, so the good cops can do their jobs without having to waste time covering for the nut cases.

I wish there was a crime to charge the cops with, who let the bipolar girl out with no assistance.

Don't most public entities have lawsuit insurance? Meaning the CPD pays premiums and may have a smaller deductible to pay.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think the answer is yes.

No. The City Council’s Finance Committee vote today was to pay nearly $33 million straight out of city funds, there was no insurance or discount. $33 million is a lot, between 2009-11 $45 million was paid out. And that doesn't cover the legal fees the city spent defending the cases.

According to a news report I saw on Channel 7 this evening, the city does have insurance for this sort of thing and will only have to pay the first $15 million out of city funds; after that the insurance picks up the rest. The way they explained it, $15 million is the annual "deductible".

My thought: Given that the city is short on police officers, think of how many new hires that $15 million could have paid for.
