I need some opinions/ reactions. My girlfriend and I are possibly moving to Jefferson Park/ Portage Park area this August. I know Jefferson Park is laid back, more family-oriented compared to Lincoln Park, Wrigley area. However, that is what we are looking for. We are also considering Portage Park just to the south of Jefferson Park. I have heard mixed reviews about Portage Park: some say it is just a southern extension of Jefferson Park, others say there are some parts of it to avoid. Is it true, if so, what parts of Portage Park are safe and others okay? Some say North or Irving Park Rd and east of Central Rd. I just need feedback to help with our decision. We are also looking to access to the Blueline/ Metra. Thanks!

North of Irving Park and east of Central sounds about right. No part of Portage Park is "bad" but parts of it are starting to look a little shaky long-term.

If you want Blue Line/Metra access then obviously the closer you live to the JeffPark transportation hub, the better. But that's no secret, and real estate around the hub is priced accordingly. Access to rail transit is obviously not as good in Portage Park, but still doable on the very eastern edge of it.

They're all fine IMO although there might be more crime in Portage Park versus Jefferson Park. I'd also look into an area like Irving Park.
