Save yourself a headache and consider the $160 parking IN your apt building a godsend. I used to street park for 2 years in Lakeview and was miserable circling around and around when everybody else was doing the same. Parking offsite is not worth the 10 minute walk in the winters, or when you have a crap load of groceries, or when it's late and you question safety, or if you think you've left your windows open when it's raining, or if you want to risk getting broken into or having damage occur.

He said "at the unit," not in the building. I'm assuming it's a lot space. If it is in fact a garage space then yeah, no-brainer, really.

The real question is how important is it to you to the $85/month. If you have an older car that you don't mind getting grease and random crap dripped on every day, and $85/month makes a difference to you, then go with the L space (or cover your car when parked). Otherwise go with the more expensive space. If you do decide to go with the L space (or ever park close to the L for that matter) be sure to shut off the motion detector alarm on your car. I live pretty close to the L and it doesn't bother much, but I've come close to smashing up cars that park under the L and have their alarm go off for 5-10 minutes any time a train goes by.

I've always heard that a lot of break ins occur near the EL. People will bust your windows when the train goes by. Makes sense but I don't have any first hand knowledge of this actually happening.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I think I'll probably end up just paying the money for the parking my building provides. Sure it's more expensive, but the security, convenience, and the fact its covered and directly behind my unit I think will make it worth it. I can always change it later if I decide to.
