Is it a good area? Depends on your frame of reference. It's not the best and it's not the worst.

Well put knitgirl. Some parts are seedy looking and dirty, some parts are cleaner and more pleasant. There are some buildings in the west part, near Wilson and Beacon that are inexpensive. Small apartments, but affordable.

I lived in Uptown on two separate occasions. It is a good place. Affordable. Not the cleanest or safest, but I never felt endangered. Try looking around the area on foot.

If you're looking to live in the City in the $20k's, Uptown may be a good option. It can be sketchy in areas at night, but it has a TON going for it: lakefront access, three Red Line stops, entertainment amenities, dining/drinking, immediate access to Lake View and Ravenswood and Andersonville (depending on where in Uptown you live). Just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine.

Try to find a place that's east of Broadway.

East of Broadyway ca be dicey, especially by say Lawrence and Sheridan or that Wilson 2am redline. Too many treatment centers, Section 8'ers, thuggish types and UptownUpdate tragedies.

Look at Argyle or Sheridan for more a functional Uptown.

20k is tight, even for a studio in Uptown. That said it's one of only a handful of convenient neighborhoods where you stand a chance of finding something with that budget. You may not be able to pick and choose the best blocks but in general try to avoid the area bound by argyle on the north, wilson on south, sheridan on the east and broadway on the west. You'll be fine if you end up inside that area but you will regularly see urban poor and signs of drug activity.

Look on Kenmore/Winthrop north of Argyle up into Edgewater for the best combination of location, affordability, and safety.
