Although I did see a Mexican food cart by the Granville stop in Edgewater one time a couple of summers ago.

You do see more food trucks than you used to though, although it's still nowhere close to being a thing like how food carts are in NYC. It doesn't matter if you're shopping in SoHo or getting off the subway in Harlem, there will be a foodcart(s). Although I will say I was up in Rogers Park recently, there were 4 food trucks near Loyola, which was kinda amazing because that used to never happen, and I lived there until of May last year. All there used to be was a More Cupcake truck near the L stop every now and then.
Actually the only time I've seen people cooking food in Wicker Park is at night. In the summer there is this lady who makes stuff like sausages and hot dogs outside, and near Flash Taco there's been another guy making tacos and tamales and stuff like that.

River North, Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview - of course, because those are more well known areas and cops are out more since it's technically illegal in the city.

Yeah, you can't ever compare this to NYC. Chicago just doesn't have the tradition these days even though in some neighborhoods you can find it - a lot of people in the city are pretty clueless to that even. I wish there would be more street food though because from the places I've visited outside of the US - I love, love, love street food and it can be quite amazing when done right. I think the big thing stopping it is that stupid brick and mortar law. It makes a little sense that these guys are being protected, but when you think about it, it's kind of silly. If you are a downtown restaurant that's selling $50 steaks, and some guy with a random food cart 100 feet away is taking 5 customers from you per hour, then perhaps you're doing something a little wrong and should improve upon something. NYC doesn't seem to have a big enough problem with it to pass a law like that.

It's not so much immune as field of vision. One particular Sunday afternoon I rode the EL from Loop to O'Hare. At some stop was an incident hardly anybody noticed except me. 2-man team, one in front other in back, pinched woman's purse as she's exiting the train. Very little commotion, hardly anybody noticed. At 2am I'd have to think you're even more vulnerable simply bcoz everyone's less alert. That said, personally I'd rather be public place (mass transit) vs. parking lot/garage, bcoz perps know higher probability of eyeballs (and now cameras) on mass transit.

^ Uh, no not me. I'm an extremely observational person. I notice everything about a person and also people so that's not it (even if I am drunk, but rarely am I so drunk that my vision is severely impaired anymore). but nice try...some people yeah you definitely have a point but that's not me. I notice too much about situations and people.
