I'm looking into living in the south loop. I feel a little silly asking this, but how do residents handle having visitors? I'm guessing that parking is hard to come by and expensive.

That is correct. Unless your guests cough up the money for a garage, they will be heading out to feed the meter every couple hours. Or they can take public transportation. When I lived in the South Loop, I had friends' cars get towed a few times as well. Definitely a negative of downtown living in my opinion.

There are some developements that include a limited amount of parking that is reserved for guests especially in the more family oriented parts of Printer's Row / South Loop. Ther are also a few pockets of "on street permit" parking and guest passes for these areas can be obtained through the aldermanic office.

There are a pretty wide range of options and with a little pre-planning rates of about $2/hr can be found.

To get towed one would have to park illegally in a private lot, deliberately park in a "tow zone" or accumulate quite a few parking violations then fail to pay them. People don't get towed simply for letting a meter expire while visting friends...
