Hey Chicagoans, has anyone noticed these wasps this year in *abundance*?

I've seen at least 3 of them around the tri-taylor area. There must be some sandy soil here somewhere!

^^^ not my videos but very cool to watch.

FYI: These wasps should not be killed. They are nearly totally harmless unless handled roughly and are way more afraid of you than a yellowjacket would be.

Enjoy!

Not seen any of them here. I had an infestation of them at my house in Georgia many years ago. It was difficult to have pool parties with those suckers all over the place.

I had them in Champaign-Urbana many years ago. There was a sandy area of soil right outside my glass patio doors and there were 4-5 nests. I loved having them there because you'd look up and there would be this giant black mass flying straight to the window and then suddenly drop to the ground. Unfortunately at the time I didn't have a video camera.

About 4 years ago I lived in an apartment right next to a nest of them in the North Center neighborhood. It was a bit troubling to have to walk past it every day while they were flying all around, but I never had a problem. They were very active around this time of the year. I think they might have been mating.

I live on the far northwest side near Niles. They started showing up around here a few years ago. It's fun to watch the males 'dogfight' each other. Don't be afraid of them as the males can't sting and the females are too busy to bother with humans; in fact I don't think I've seen any females since they're busy all day. Some entomologists call them "Gentle Giants". I haven't had any damage to turf or garden areas either. I'd rather have these wasps around instead of those damned yellow jackets!

THE SOLITARY GROUND WASP POPULATION IS EXPLODING BECAUSE THEY ARE UTILIZING EMERALD ASH BORER NOW! Just check under untreated Ash trees succumbing to EAB to observe several holes in the surrounding soil. They like sand and Baseball fields are hot spots. Many things will be affected during the Extinction of our American Ash tree, which is the "Keystone" species of our ecosystem producing most cover of Green seen from space. lol, yep, I get them every Summer down here in the Atlanta area. They'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, but they're all bark and no bite.
