..died just days before his 84th birthday..

Chicago's biggest sports hero, especially to those who are middle-aged, and older. He last played a major league game in 1971, but his influence was still being felt. Back -to-back MVPs in 1958-59, hit 40+ HRS five times from 1955-60, and when he was 36-38 years of age ( 1967-69), averaged over 90 RBIs per season. In 1965 Durocher wanted him gone, but Ernie persevered, and proved that his career was far from over..

You can get a flavor for Ernie in the prime of his career ( 1960), by watching a few of his "Home Run Derby" appearences on YouTube. Easy-going, and always upbeat..

RIP, Mr. Cub.

RIP Ernie - Mr. Cub. He never took himself too seriously and was always surprised at his luck in life. His sunny
disposition and love of playing for the Cubs made him one of the most beloved sports figures and a person
admired by countless Chicago sports fans.
January 23, 2015, a sad day.

NPR interview (audio) with Ernie Banks. What a sweet and humble man. It was also nice to hear
Jack Brickhouse.
