That's my favorite. The car may be gone for ten minutes because the owner drove to get coffee, or it might be gone ten hours because he's at work.

No one gets to save parking in summer when the roads are dry; why do they think the spot will still be there when they return ten hours later?

Fear. One of my co-workers came home from a 12 hour day of work, moved dibs, had the air let out of his tires this morning. People don't like confrontation, damage or inconvenience.

Reminds me when I had a small Fiat and my Brother had a small Nissan in a neighborhood where you can circle looking for a spot for like 20 minutes. We found a "spot between two driveways if we touched bumpers we barely squeezed in.

I would keep both car keys on my key chain and I would back my car up half a spot and move my brothers car back half a spot. I got caught doing it once or twice and folks got really mad and had to stop after while as I figured my windows would be broken.

We used to sit in car on alternate side days. My favorite my neighbor was throwing out a coach but bulk pick up was not for a week we would drag that into spots. Once we saw an abandoned car in a legal spot and five of us pushed it in front of hydrant to free back up a spot.

People get crazy

One new guy in a BMW broke all the "rules" who was new to town. After a few weeks someone broke his windsheild and carved A##hole in his hood.

Funny we had some jerk take a spot like that once who did not even live in neighborhood. Funniest thing the landlord took his plates off his car and threw them out while he was gone and guy drove off and did not notice. I always wondered what happened.

No damage at all to car, but what a headache.

What makes people stop doing "Dibs" during the summer? Why is it only in the winter?

Dibs is a result of the labor you put in to dig out the snow from the parking spot.

Or by driving out of a parking spot your car was in prior to snowfall.

I've lived in Lakeview for 5 years and have never seen dibs anywhere in the neighborhood. I always assumed it was more of a suburban thing. But still you'll likely have difficultly finding a place in Lakeview just because it's Lakeview. Parking there sucks year round.

Default Dibs? In a suburb? Never.

Suburbs generally prohibit overnight on-street parking except for a handful of places like Oak Park and there folks all pitch in together in a kumbayah spirit of "it takes a village" ....
