Artist Theaster Gates Bought a Crumbling Chicago Bank for $1 and Turned it Into a World-Class Arts Center | Colossal

Quote:
One might think that an abandoned 1920s bank on Chicago’s South Side, crumbling from top to bottom—the roof long collapsed, exposing the interior to snow and rain for years—would be destined for a wrecking ball. Like so many other decaying structures in the area, that was certainly the fate of the Stony Island Savings & Loan building before artist, urban planner, and Chicago resident Theaster Gates intervened.
We need more projects like this one on the South and West Sides.

Wow, we've passed that building so many times and always thought it was impressive. Nice
to see that someone felt the same and had the wherewithal to preserve it and make it a positive
contribution to the community.

Went there a few months ago. The library portion of it is a really great room. The rest of the place has potential and I'd love to see it soon, especially the Frankie Knuckles portion. Love Theaster Gates - one of my favorite people in the entire world. He's a very special person.

I think I rode a shuttle bus with some of Theaster Gates' crew at the Istanbul airport last year. They were all from Chicago and talking about art and music and were coming from some of the cities Gates had been in, in Europe that year. Could have been coincidence, but I like to believe they were with him.

I will have to check it out. I was actually inside the bank when one owner wanted to try to get something around $750K-$800K (if I remember correctly). The bottom floor was flooded, but upstairs still looked nice despite the obvious neglect. A lot of damage was left over from a previous fire and the roof needing serious attention. Still, it was an absolutely (potentially) gorgeous structure. Looking back, I don't think my buyer was serious, but the seller was obviously way too much for the damage and amount of work needed.

Glad it was saved and turned into something nice. I'm drooling over all of the books.
