It is the Austin neighborhood. Poor black for the most part. Very close to Oak Park which is a relatively affluent majority white suburb.

I thought it was the austin neighborhood. I was told it was near Austin and Division. I worked in the Austin neighborhood before. Do you think that area is close enough to Oak Park, or do you think it is still unsafe?

Austin is a poor, unsafe area. Yes, once you cross one particular street, you are in a fun, interesting, walkable "suburb" called Oak Park (it is a pre-WW2 suburb and by and large is actually an extension of the city's street grid). But when you cross back into the city limits, you are in Austin. It is a very depressed area, you can probably get good deals on rent there. I don't see it as a place that will revitalize or gentrify anytime soon, but if you are willing to buy there and hold out for 30 years or so, I do see it as a place that can be revitalized. You would think that it would revitalize, since it is close to Oak Park; Im not sure what dynamics are preventing its revitalization, though.

I have worked in austin. It doesn't look that run down but trust me it is one of the most unsafe areas of the city. RENTIS cheap but u get what u pay for. The crap is slowly moving into oak park. I thought that adress was Austin I was just making sure. Thanks.

You can search the Chicago Police Department's CLEAR Map application to see recent crimes in the area.

6000 W. is the dividing line between Chicago and Oak Park. So you're right on the border.

I drive down Austin frequently. Last week I was on a stop light on Austin and I looked left towards the city and there was someone sleeping on a bust stop bench. Very ghetto looking. I looked to my right at Oak Park and it looked well, like Oak Park. Very different like night and day. Do not live in Austin. If you are looking for cheap rent you are better off living in Cicero. I bet you can even find some good places in Oak Park too.

austin is one of the biggest community areas in chicago.

I'd prefer not to live on division and austin, however, I would live in galewood, which is considered austin.

it is the part of austin that is just north of north avenue bordering oak park, going as far north as grand ave and west of narragansett and east of harlem.

its basically a suburb that's technically in the city. I'd have no problem renting/living in that area.

I would also live on Midway Park, with houses that rival those in Oak Park.
