A commute from any of those neighborhoods to where your wife works would be reasonable. I guess that's where you work would come into the equation. BTW, if you think Foster and Sheridan (Uptown? I think) is sketchy, then Humboldt Park will be worse:

Humboldt is changing quickly, it's safer than Uptown.

It may be changing quickly, but it's not safer than Uptown according to those stats from the Tribune. Lawrence west of Ashland is almost unrecognizable from what it was 15 or maybe even just 10 years ago.

The vast majority of Uptown is actually quite nice and safe. East of the El can be sketchy in parts between Lawrence and Montorse, but west is really nice generally.

It is changing but it's still a very rough neighborhood on the whole, particularly as you get further west into it. It might be worth a look but not a lot of deals there anymore because everybody's speculating on it being the next Logan Square. But if you do find a deal, I'd carefully check the area on the CPD Clearmap to see what kind of action's going down up in there. Many realtors tout Humboldt Park properties as "hot," and unfortunately they all too often mean literally. And as a general rule, I'd recommend getting as close to the park as possible.

It depends on the area. The area east of the park is changing quickly, and is actually part of the West Town community area. Humboldt proper is far from "safer than Uptown". 27 homicides there in 2016, compared to 8 in Uptown.

Definitely check out Lincoln Square/Ravenswood/Ravenswood Manor. They are not as "sketchy" as the area you mentioned. I agree with avoiding Humboldt Park due to the sketch factor (based on your criteria).
