So since i haven't been out in my car for a month, i go out and park in the city and they have new parking meters - pay by plate. I was able to follow the instructions ok, but it was very weird.

Is there a benefit to this? What was wrong with the old ones?

For you, you don't have to go back to your car to display a ticket on your dashboard, and you can add time remotely through your phone without going back to your car.

For the city, it's cheaper for a few reasons, for example not having to stock machines with the ticket paper, as it's all electronic.

Yep, truth here. On the positive side, the phone app is actually pretty damn easy/convenient to use.

They were scanning your plate with cameras before these new meters.

Get the app. I resisted thinking I don’t want one more app on my phone, but it’s actually ridiculously easy and convenient.
