I've at least biked through all 77 community areas; somehow remember that Dunning was the last one I got to. (Then, having decided I'd seen everything, I moved away ) It helped that a friend of mine used to do an annual day-long 100-mile bike ride within the city limits -- really helped me fill in the edges.

Pretty crazy economic diversity, but surprising just how many of the buildings are pretty much the same regardless of which side of town you're on. "Ten thousand copies of the same 20 buildings..."

A lot of the photos I took over those years:

I loved touring historic Pullman, although I didn't get around to going there until after the old Florence Hotel caught fire. It was still standing, but was just a burnt-out hulk.

I don't remember a McDonald's. Did they build that one recently?

That's definitely well into might-as-well-be-suburb territory. Heck, that might as well be Parma, Ohio.

One way to get a good overview of many Chicago neighborhoods is to ride the L. I have ridden the entire system (103 miles of track) to and from each terminus on all 8 lines and the 5 branches. Having a Ventra Card makes this easy to accomplish.

While not every neighborhood in the city is covered by L service, this is a good way to visit parts of the city which are unfamiliar to you.

Ha. Exactly. *That* is why I don't care if I ever make it to all 77 community areas. I love Chicago, but I'm more interested in all 50 states and all 7 continents.

Where's Johnny Depp with pointy metal fingers?

I've been to every community area that either the 'L' runs through or that abuts the Lake plus a few bonus ones. So between 62-70. I don't think I'm in a hurry to make it to all 77. There is a slim possibility that I've been to all 77 already since I am pretty adventurous but don't always pay attention to boundaries.

The only two people I know personally who can swear for sure they're been to every community area are private social workers.

There is a McDonalds last time i was there a couple years ago, its on a main street just south of the Historic Pullman, but is decorated and made like what would fit in there to the architecture. so it may be just a little south of where you were looking. I thought it was pretty cool.

Pullman is a fascinating place. My dad's first cousin just passed away - she lived right on the Square in one of the corner-round buildings. You can see how that area was once a bustling, wonderful spot. Even still, the homes right around there are very nice. She was very involved with the community. I have some relatives on the walls of the historic center there.

I've been told the gangs surrounding that area have a general understanding that Pullman is off limits. Punishments there exceed the crimes committed, if you get my drift. Surely it's not completely immune, but much safer than the surrounding Roseland, where my dad grew up in the 50s and 60s.

I've cruised through all of them, except for the 2 or 3 right outside of O'Hare. And I've probably physically traveled through them, just didn't ride through sidestreets or anything.
