I though I would share this letter that a reader wrote to the Sun-Times about growing up in Lake View.

Before they called it Wrigleyville . . . :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Other Views (http://www.suntimes.com/news/otherviews/2249300,CST-EDT-open08a.article - broken link)

More info on the "development" near Wrigley Field:

"...the iO would have to be torn down to make way for the new development.

The development would also clear away the businesses on either side of iO – Bar Louie, 3545 N. Clark St.; and the Salt & Pepper Diner with its distinctive red neon "Eat" sign at 3537 N. Clark St.

Going down the block, the development would level the Goose Island Wrigleyville Brewpub, 3535 N. Clark St.; Mullen's Bar and Grill, 3527 N. Clark St; the Red Ivy Sports Lounge, 3519 N. Clark St.; Moxie Dining and Drinks, 3517 N. Clark St.; Pauly's Pizza Ria, 3515 N. Clark St.; and the Irish Oak restaurant and bar, 3511 N. Clark St..."

I really don't see the big deal here. It's very similar to the newer dorm structure on Fullerton and Racine. The website for it says existing tenants will be given an option to lease space in the new building. I don't think we need more residential units in this neighborhood though. We do need a modern hotel though.

my question is: why can't they just do this a few blocks north where Clark is pretty barren, relatively speaking?

And shouldn't Tunney be worrying more about the budget and other such matters instead of spending this much time going to bat for a private developer?

This development plan is terrible. It's going to completely ruin the grain of Clark Street. Tunney is a sell-out, and he will lose the next election over this issue. Rember Ald. Matlack in Bucktown? He lost over a much smaller issue--the Artful Dodger. And that was just one small bar.

And Chi-town Native is right about the parcels north of Clark. What about the huge McDonald's parcel? Or north of the Metro where things are a bit dead?

Actually to me, the perfect place for this is at the corner of Grace and Halsted at the church/IHOP/parking lot site.

Better yet-buy the co-op from the co-op, gut it and make it part of the hotel developmtent as well.

2 birds-one stone.

I don't know why that church insists on hanging on to that huge parcel. They're sitting on a gold mine, even in this down market.

Shiller. Co-op. Votes. Money for social services.
