You're probably going to get a more accurate and researched answer from an online salary calculator. I'd start with salary.com. From what I can tell, HR professionals do pretty well here.

First off there's not a lot of jobs open period in Chicago, let alone anywhere else. Secondly, a lot of companies aren't hiring right now, meaning they aren't hiring people who hire people. If you have 5 years experience, you'll probably have to take an entry level HR job, because companies know they can hire someone right out of college who can do what you do at a much lower salary. Pair that aspect with the high cost of living, I'd say you might just want to stay where your at and keep the job you have (if you have one).

Good luck in your search though...

"needadvise". A lot more information is needed to answer your question. At what level are you within your current organization? VP or above, manager with direct reports, benefit coordinator, recruiter? Do you have an MBA? If so from what tier school?

It is just that salaries are all over the place for someone working in HR with 5 years experience. You could be at 100K+ for a management job from the right school and/or a prior executive/management background or 25K a year if you have a BA and work in a lower level HR postion answering benefits questions.
