I have read all the necessary topics before creating my own, and I still have questions.

I am moving in the spring with a friend of mine, after finishing up our respective grade school programs. I am moving from Portland, she from Boston. We have been to Chicago many, many times, and are familiar with all the major things: transportation, weather, etc.

We would ideally like to live in the Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood or possibly Ukrainian Village, in a 2 bedroom for about $1200 with at least water/heat included. I've been in contact with several Realtor agencies, and getting a little bit of a run-around with them. Craigslist has been helpful, but I kind of want a personal opinion, from people who will know.

My question:
Is this possible, or is it just an ignorant pipe-dream? Any sort of advice would be great.

Thanks!

I just finished my own apartment search (for a one bedroom) and considered wicker park and ukranian village. I couldn't find anything under 900 that was halfway decent (ie not a "garden" apartment), but I think a two bedroom for ~1,200 is definitely do-able. You might want to check out chicago reader, which is how I eventually found my place. Here's a selection from a brief search:

$1200/mo including heat is a bit of a stretch but not out of the question. You won't get a top end apartment at that rate but you should find something that is habitable and maybe even has a bit of character.

I suspect the real reason you're getting the runaround is because you're not moving for several months. That's way too early to start looking seriously, so property managers and rental agents are going to blow you off in favor of clients ready to rent right now until you are also ready to rent.

I think Drover hit it on the head. People usually find apartments just a few months before the moving date in Chicago.

I agree that $1200 for a livable two bedroom with heat included will be tight.

I say livable two-bedroom, because a lot of apartments in the neighborhood have one small bedroom and one closet-sized bedroom (sometimes without a window - rendering it not a bedroom at all)

I live in a two-bedroom but I can't imagine using the other bedroom (which is 6 1/2 x 7) as anything other than an office.

Not saying it can't be done, because it probably can, but it'll be tough.

I rent from Peak Properties and I like them pretty well thus far.
