I don't think the city really wants to ban them, just last spring an attempt to do so failed miserably. It is an issue that will be getting a lot more discussion over the next few years. I'm hoping for a big city grant to raise chickens on a green roof on my house

Awesome! I hope they don't ban them. I would like some if we ever buy a home here.

THis is funny. Especially, that the thread name "Raising chickens in Chicago?" gets one question mark, but "Moving to Chciago with Kids??" gets two!

So chickens are less questionable than kids.

Well, public schools aren't an issue for chicken owners.

I saw mention of having sheep??? Man I want some sheep! I didn't know you could have a sheep in your yard in Chicago. LMFAO! I could see it now... Neighbors are sitting outside on a warm sunny day around the patio table in their back yard eatting their bbq rib tips and all of a sudden.... BAAAAAHHHH (comes from over the fence) "Man, what the hell was that?!!!"

well, chickens are a little smaller & if you get the breed that my son is now raising, they weigh less than 1 pound each, so, they would fit into a Chgo backyard a little easier...

There are restrictions on slaughtering chickens, but the restrictions are mostly health code violations, not related to keeping chickens at all. There was a proposed ban on it last year but it failed.

From what I've been able to find you are also allowed up to one goat or sheep. I've had a few chances to get a free goat but haven't been able to verify what the law is regarding goats, so I haven't taken advantage of that yet.
I'm in Lake County and would love to find out if they're allowed for us. Just who or what department would I start with at the local level? I can just imagine being laughed off the phone. Thx -
