You might want to take some more trips up north around this time through February-March and take in all that nice cold weather. (; Do you know what its like to stand outside for 5 minutes in 2 degree weather waiting for a bus? Hehe...

If you live a mile or two west of the lake as I do (in Wicker Park) the wind is no different really than any other place I've ever lived.

Just wait until the wind starts blowing above 10 mph when the temp is around zero (which we will get Thursday and Friday) and you are making your way home or to work on the CTA.

So what are some suggestions on surviving the winter? Should I buy snow boots? thermals? etc? The reason I ask now is because after winter is over I can probably find all that stuff cheap around here. Oh, what kind of coat do you suggest? I currently only wear my pea coat, and stay pretty toasty, but I don't know if my pea coat will be good enough for Chicago.

Oh it's going to be awful -- but that is a very isolated event that doesn't happen more than once or twice a season at most -- not a particularly good reason to not move to Chicago.

Kansas City has awful wind and when it gets cold out there on the prairie and there's no buildings to stop it? Now that's gruesome.

Snow boots, a down coat that goes past your knees, hats, scarves, gloves, long underwear and big sweaters.

Now I am not saying it does not suck to be on the prarie as you describe. But how many people really have to experience it for that long of a time except for walking to the car to start it so it will "warm up" ,back to the house, and after 1o minutes or so back to the car.

Yeah, but does Kansas City have a huge amount of people (that do not own cars) waiting for buses and trains as well as walking on a regular basis?

This a big reason is why it is worse here in winter for a higher percentage and number of people than many other places.

That is the difference.

That is part of the truth behind the Chicago weather myth.

Number of CTA only Bus rides in 2008:328.2 million
Number of CTA only train rides in 2008:198.2 million
(Mind you this is not including Pace bus ridership and Metra rail ridership)

Number of Kansas City METRO ridership in 2008:16.5 million
