So I signed my lease and I am scheduled to move downtown next month. I am transferring for work from the south. I know ZERO people there (as of now).

How can I entertain myself in an affordable manner, while still new in the city by myself? I do not want to feel alone, in a new city. How can I occupy myself in the bitter cold winter? I am a pretty social person.

I will have a lot of cable channels if all else fails.

Don't watch too much TV! Ok, Chicagoans are pretty friendly people. You can go the Craigslist route and find people on there. There are people on there that are many times going to post things based on interest.

My other suggestion woudl be to check out professional groups. What do you do for a living? There many different groups that you can join that you can meet people through.

You can do things such as go to bars, but would not really recommend that route.

I think you should try riding the bus from one dicey undesirable section of town to a hipper slightly less sketchy part of town as often as possible...

But seriously bars / taverns / tap rooms have long been an acceptable place to hang out in Chicago. The smoking ban has removed the biggest yuck factor. Must bartenders sorta like new-to-the-neighborhood types, especially if the remember that standard bartender tip is 50% in Chicago

Indoor activities to enjoy in the winter include televised basketball. If you are not currently a fan, it is something to consider, at some bars it is mandatory.

With the tight economic conditions low cost activities, like nursing a beer or two through an afternoon of TV ought to be pretty popular with a lot of folks.

The standard bartender tip has never been 50% in Chicago. It is more like .50-$1 a beer and a $1 and up for each shot or mixed drink.

OK, I am still jangled from the stupid commute, for a failing economy there were an awful lot of people clogging the streets...

I might have to find a bartender right now. Or at least raid my own liquor cabinet.

Volunteer (Chicago cares or One Brick are a good place to start). Use meet-up and find a newcomers group. Join a book club. If you are religious, find a church, temple, mosque, etc. and go to religious services.
