I must be out of tune with whats going on in the neighborbood because I dont ever remember hearing about a drive-by shooting at Clemente in the two years ive been living here (Walton & Rockwell). I walk around the neighborhood all the time and nobody has ever messed with me (knock on wood!) The neighborhood north of Augusta & Rockwell looks a bit dicey, though... That area of Western the OP was talking about seems perfectly safe to me, though.

Exactly. So very close to (like north and if possible a tad east of ) Chicago and Damen would be preferable. In that case we would be in East Ukrainian Village, but near the border (Damen) to Ukrainian Village.

I lived in Wicker Park/UK Village for a few years and LOVED it.
I was home for Xmas and got all weepy and emotional when I was out hanging around with my friends.

Ok, Oakley & Iowa is not a bad area at all. It is east of Western, and if the apartment is on Oakley Blvd, those buildings are GORGEOUS! Ukie Village (between Damen & Western, and Division & Chicago) never got all that bad in the first place, and now it's very desirable. The OP should keep her wits about her when she's out, but that's in ANY neighborhood. Plus you're not all that far from the Empty Bottle over there....a good thing, to be sure.

Actually Ukie Village is nicer than East Village. East Village is still rough around the edges, especially near Chicago & Ashland.

And Ukrainian Village is very rough around the edges at Division and Western to be specific-which is far worse than Chicago and Ashland.

Division & Western is NOT the whole neighborhood, and it's on the very northwest fringe. The neighborhood as a whole is a lovely area. Have you ever been down Oakley Blvd, or some of the side streets over there? Even your wonderful area of East Lakeview (a.k.a. BOYSTOWN) has its rough spots.

There are many areas west of Western that are quite nice too. But safety is an issue when you're on the fringe of a poor, gang-infested Puerto Rican neighborhood. That's just the way it is. (Though safety has definitely improved in the last decade).

I don't disagree. As I said you need to keep your wits about you there. Of course, that's anywhere. No, you probably shouldn't pass by Clemente High School. (Also, it's the neighborhoods north & west of there that are the worst) It just seems like Avengerfire makes it seem like the whole area is a crime-ridden slum until you get to Damen Ave, which is not the case.

The OP asked about Iowa & Oakley, which is east of Western, and about 4 blocks from Clemente. Not far, but not exactly next door. Yes, there can be spillover crime from Clemente, and the nasty area NW of Division & Western, but there aren't gang shootouts, and drug dealers on the corner either.

Dude I was born in Chicago and grew up here.I have been all over the city and go all over the city very often.

Who do you think you are talking to someone that just moved to Chicago two years ago from Iowa?

...and if you think that I have never mentioned the rough spots in East Lakeview in this forum perhaps you need to use the "search this forum" tool tool.
