The thing about Pullman is that yes, the houses are quaint and all. But what about lifestyle stuff like running to the post office, grocery shopping, the gas station, the dry cleaners? When you look at really living your life there, to me it's an entirely different story. The closely surrounding areas, as in across the street in some cases are pretty rough around the edges and would certainly be a huge factor. Dealing with those type of issues gets old very fast.

You got it mistaken for the Eastside neighborhood. Pullman is around 80% black. Plus as far I'm concern, there isn't a known LA type racial tension between blacks and latinos in Chicago. Most likely it's more gang related than race

If your heart is set on Pullman why don't you try to find a summer sublet there? June, July and August are the most dangerous months in Chicago so if after living there for a summer you feel safe and comfortable then by all means dive in. As it gets colder you might have better price point negotiation with sellers as well.
Mt.Greenwood and Bridgeport is no different from Pullman as for sexuality issues. The only difference I see is racial demographic. If I was a gay person living on the southside, I would choose Hyde Park/Kenwood or Beverly. However as surprising it might seem, there are gay/bi people in rough hoods on the southside.

What is typically called "Historic Pullman" (not an official chicago neighborhood and a subset of pullman) is probably 60% white.

Well it would only be surprising if we had a stereotypical notion of gay people.

I lived in the historic part of Pullman for two years (112th and Champlain) and the "lifestyle stuff" was just as normal for me as it was in other places I'd lived. Since it is right by a major expressway, it is easy for one to "escape" and do business in other areas. However, I frequently used a local cleaners and the post office in next door Roseland with no problems. I also walked back and forth between the Kensington Metra station and home when I worked downtown. I think it all depends on your tolerance for "urban issues".

I don't think it is anymore. When I lived there it seemed that it was mostly Latino and black. I think it may be just about an even mix of the three now.

I believe some retail is going up soon or maybe they even started the project.
Beleive its a wal mart super center.

I also remember hearing some federal dollars that were allocated to that area.

Just drove thru that area last week and it seems okay in the light of day.

Night time is when you may wish to drive thru.

Yes the expressway is close and several shopping centers are within a comfortable commute.

Not sure if Beverly is out of your range but at least its stable.
Pullman is definatley something to keep your eye on.

I love the historical bldgs and homes its unique

Believe the trib did a write up this past summer
