Hi,
We'll be coming through Chicago in the early afternoon Monday, July 27th on our way to California. We'll have a dog with us who will need to stretch his legs...any recommendations for lunch (a place we can grab a sandwich) and an outside area to hang out? We've never been to your city before, and although we'll only have a few hours, we'd love any ideas on how we can do the afternoon right...
Thank you!

Basically any place with a patio will allow you to hang out with your leashed pooch. North Pond is a pretty good restaurant that is nestled inside Lincoln Park. You could have a nice lunch, run your dog in the park and then take a quick walk through our free zoo in Lincoln Park.

Parking is free along Stockton in the park but might take some circling. There is lot on the corner of Lasalle and Stockton that should have hourly parking available to you.

Like someplace close the airport or a rest area along highway or do really want to find an urban dog park?

We're actually driving cross country, and Chicago is our pit stop.

What about the Riverwalk? We'd also prefer easy on/easy off access to the major highways.

Hmm, a pit stop? Well it is heckuva detour but your dog would love the parks around University of Chicago and though technically there are no designated dog beaches on the south side you would probably love a stop:
Chicago Park District (http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/custom.beaches.cfm - broken link)

Should the Olympics be in the US in 2016 you and your pup can say "been there done that".

Seriously the south side beaches are THE most underutilized portion of Chicago's lakefront and few people realize how empty and lovely they can be. The best thing for you is that if you are using 80 cross country you can get on and off without really going to far out of your way:

from:41.581552,-87.196255 to:7059 S South Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60649 to:Unknown road to:I-80 W - Google Maps
