I read on some news site, but now I can't find it.

It just sad a person jumped/fell off a building.

Didn't that just happen like a month or two ago?

How many people usually commit suicide downtown like that in the past years?

I saw that someone fell on the Red line tracks again. I don't think he died but I only saw the tail end of it.

Venom, that's a good question - and one I've wondered myself. Just last month, a 23-year-old guy jumped off the Red Roof Inn at Ontario/St. Clair. Back in March, someone jumped off of Marina City. Then last autumn, someone jumped from the Avenue East condos on St. Clair/Illinois. Last year, someone jumped from an upper floor at Sandburg Village. And these are just the ones I happen to know about. Sheesh.

Based on Chicago's population and the average US suicide rate we should expect about 275-300 suicides a year in the city. If just 5% of those decide to end their lives by jumping that would be 13-15 people doing it each year. I think I usually hear of about 5 or 6 a year.

Nationally there are always more suicides than murders, it is a lot more common than people think, it just doesn't get the same media attention.

There was one about a year ago from Doral Plaza. He landed on the street between Doral and the Prudential Bldg.

If you read about the Great Depression men were jumping out of office windows when the stock market crashed. I think when you see men who can't find a job, that does not have food for his family, and is on the verge of being evicted it happens. It is sad when people can't hope for a better tomorrow.

Suicide is never the answer, any decision that you can't change or augment at a later date is a normally a bad decision.

Sometimes you need to be grateful for what you still have over, pondering what you've already lost.
