thats stupid. Recognize that each person is giving a valid personal experience .. you can decide if that person's expreience is OK or not ok for you.
I agree with you, but this poster in question is spreading false information. Is there crime there? Yes, there's crime in every single neighborhood - even the safest ones. However, there's a difference between a lot of crime and a little bit. Hyde Park is not utopia, but it's far from a dangerous neighborhood. I have a large handful of friends in Hyde Park and not one of them has ever told me a horror story about living there. Not one of them has been robbed on the street. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but to the extent that this poster is implying? I really highly doubt that.

If almost every single student this poster knows has a horror story, then either the crime rate in HP would be higher, or this posters knows about 5 people.

Sorry, but facts are facts. There's been 6 violent crimes and 54 property crimes reported in the last month, for 25K-30K people. That's a damn low crime rate. If those were the monthly averages, then the violent crime rate would be 288 per 100K, which is between about Virginia Beach and Lexington, KY's rate.. and the property crime rate would be 2592 per 100k which is about the same as Virginia Beach or El Paso.

We forgot to mention that not all U of C students even live in Hyde Park. Some live in Woodlawn and Kenwood, and I'm sure a few live in Washington Park too. Nobody is denying that Washington Park and most of Woodlawn are not great neighborhoods, but Hyde Park is a good neighborhood with not a lot of crime. If this poster IS being truthful, what's not to say that these people he knows don't actually have crimes happening to them in those neighborhoods, not Hyde Park?

Marothisu - yeah I would say Hyde Park is generally safe enough that I would feel ok walking around some parts of it. I knew a lady and her family who lived there and when i visited i didn't feel any danger was around me. But my friend says its not so safe as she chose to move out of there , also with the Obama ruckus whenever obama was coming to town there, they closed all the streets, bad for you if you live down the street there trying to get home when obama is in town.

As for me I prefer the northside, only because im used to it, the southside seems like a different city to me whenever I've traveled over to the other side. they even have a south side accent "Da Bearssss".. that north siders dont have. its that Ditka accent.

They close all the streets??? In Hyde Park? No!!!!

I live a few blocks east and my street has not been closed because the President is in town. Never!!!!

I agree with the accent comment. Every side of Chicago has an accent. West side accent is the most annoying. Lots of slurring and and loud barking. Can't understand them at all.

If your friend doesn't feel safe in Hyde Park they are right in moving. People have to live where they have peace of mind. Understand also most don't leave Hyde Park because of crime.

And you're from/lived in Memphis? The irony.

When the president is in town, they shut off about three blocks of 51st street (Hyde Park boulevard) making the 5100 blocks of University, Greenwood and Ellis dead ends. Bus and other traffic cannot drive through on 51st street -- that's about it for traffic disruption.

I've lived in Hyde Park about 40 years. Students on all major campuses are targets because they interact with a number of people, have many possessions and keep odd hours. Yes, students can get mugged in Hyde Park, but there is no quantum difference between other campuses.

All in all, the crime rate in Hyde Park is low for an urban collegiate area. It is better than the surroundings of Columbia University, Temple or USC.

Yes! I lived in Memphis for 5.6121 years and I'm writing about west siders accents being annoying.

It took me a while to get use to the southern accent but west siders sound like they are angry all the time.

Memphians have a serious twang! There is also some slang but Chicago has slang to. Especially west siders.

I also lived in Memphis from 2008 to 2010. And in Olive Branch, MS from 2010 to early 2012. I love the southern accent. But I love all the accents in this country. Especially once that everyone else hate..

Now that I don't live there, I love southern accents. Mix in some of the polite tone. You've got me.

I also love New Jersey accents. New Yorkers are cool too but you can never win an argument with them. They will chew you out with less than five words and you will never be right from that point.

The degree to which the University of Chicago provides signficant security for the campus, including the extensive medical facilities and newer recreational amenities is almost certainly FAR GREATER than other schools in urban settings. Homes and apartments that are within the well patrolled area generally command a hefty premium relative to those just a block or two further away. Anyone with the chops to merit admission to either the highly competitive undergrad or graduate programs at UofC would be a fool to give a second thought to enrolling for fears of crime especially if they live inside the area patrolled by campus security which includes a rather large chunk of Hyde Park...
