Verbal inspiration means that God has influenced what is written? Is it used in more religions? Inspiration has the definition: 5. Theol. a divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon the mind or soul. Influences by God, is it by the holy spirit, or just by God? Is it by inspired in Christian settings meant filled and guided by The holy spirit? Thanks

Same thing. The Holy Spirit is God's primary means of communicating, interacting, etc with man. He has also used angels and His Son.
No, "verbal inspiration" is the idea that God actually "dictated" what was written. An idea used to bolster the assumed authority of scripture.
He did dictate some of it, unless of course you do not believe the Bible is God's word. If not, why bother to post as your word would have even less authority?
nateswift: What is meant by that God actually "dictated" what was written? So you mean God controlled man to write what he did. You agree with that The holy spirit is Gods primary means of communicating with man, but verbal inspired doesn't mean dictated by The holy spirit, but by God in another way? Does the bible say anything about being dictated by God in an other way than by The Holy Spirit? Thanks

The point, Hans, is that some people think that the Bible is the very words of God in spite of the conflicts and different perceptions expressed. Some parts of it may actually be, but the only "authority" mentioned for followers of Christ is the Spirit and everything should be measured by the Spirit with the tools provided for that purpose: reason, the testimony of those we know to be following the Way and most of all by what characterizes the Spirit (The list in Galations is a good measure).
expat, in answer to your question, "unless of course you do not believe the Bible is God's word. If not, why bother to post as your word would have even less authority?" I'm not looking for any authority but the Spirit and what I am looking to find is the truth Jesus said that "Comforter" would lead to. The Bible is a good tool for that purpose when understood, but it is not that "truth."

You must spread some Reputation around, before giving it to nateswift again!
The Holy Spirit has one job & that is to teach YOU - All things; Keep on asking and you will keep on receiving; (Matt 7:7)
The Holy Spirit will not speak of Himself He will only speak that which He hears from the Father.
The Holy Spirit can also speak to you in many other ways; There is one way to find out if this is true or not; Keep a journal.
Ask the Holy Spirit for something specific & detailed; Write that down in your journal with the date; You might be in a restaurant or any other place. Television, A book - and someone might say something and it will "click" with you. Write that (answer) down in your journal and use that when you have times of "doubts". As you compile your journal - you will have quite a testimony to the workings of the Holy Spirit in your life.
All I have to do is look at my life and see the many crisis situations that were "super naturally" solved.
Jesus said: My people can have anything they want: But instead they keep saying what they have!

Well said, nate . . . but it is important to emphasize the "inspiration" is NOT "dictation." The "inspirations" must be interpreted by the receiver using their level of knowledge and existing beliefs ABOUT God. That is why there is so much savagery and barbarity in the recordings of those inspirations . . . NOT because God is remotely savage or barbaric. An ignorant (lacks valid knowledge) savage barbarian cannot interpret things any other way!

Ther draw back to your view of that leading, is that it is extra Biblical. In reality it will guides you to undertsnad what the Bible clearly says, not what men have created in the way of beliefs or we may think it sayd. If it contradicts clear scripture then you have two choices.
1. You (or I) are wrong
2. the understanding of it being "clear" scripture is wrong.
To solve #2 we do not rely on what we believe is spirit led, rather we search the scriptures more diligently and pray for the leading of God's spirit. Paul commended the Boreans for this, not for taking his word for it or trusting what they thought was spirit revealed. The idea we each have this special leading is why there are thousands of denominations. That is not God's way of leading, as he is not a God of confusion.
