You must believe in magic to accept the explanation.
The gradual, persistent decline in the lived years of men outlined in the
Hebrew books of the Old Testament could be true and accurate.
If it is true, I have found logical support to it by considering that the
subsequent generations of man were watered down, the further they
became removed from the immortal state in the Garden. Sin and Death
gradually made men (and women) live shorter lives. Think of it as a form
of devolution, or dilution from the pre-Fall state.

I think we are making a come back. Life expectancy is going up rapidly. We ill soon live to be 900 again:
Carol Hill wrote an interesting article on how the ages in Genesis may have primarily numerological significance (which sounds strange to us but would have been at home in the Mesopotamian culture): http://www.asa3.org/ASA/PSCF/2003/PSCF12-03Hill.pdf
I don't know how much of it I buy into but it is interesting and worth a read.
In the time of Adam and Eve, the life span was around 900 years because of the different atmosphere (earth was more like a terrarium) and the clean/perfect gene pool. This is why the reptiles grew so large (dinosaurs) and why families were able to reproduce without genetic defects we have now. It was called the antediluvian period where people kept aging and their skulls grew larger than the average today; that's why we find fossils with the big skulls and prominent brows, and dinosaurs fossilized footprints next to humans.
Then right before the flood, God declared a shorter life span to 120 years Genesis 6:3 "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." This doesn't mean exactly 120 years, it means that life span was shortened to the average life span of 120, so it could be a little older, or a little younger. This coincided with the atmosphere changing after the water canopy fell during the flood and the earth was no longer protected from the UV rays which accelerates the aging process and limits the size growth of reptiles. God did draw the line regarding families reproducing at this time, as it was made law, after the flood. This is about where the gene pool had so many defects that family members had duplicate genetic flaws that would cause problems in the offspring.
Then the average life span was cut down to 70 to 80 years as proclaimed in Psalm 90:10 "Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away." Which we still are at today.
So a combination of a protective terrarium-like environment and clean gene pool gave people longevity in the beginning of creation.
Do a search on the internet, it's fascinating. There is more information available.

All those sites are Sola Scriptura creationist types.
The Catholic Church has no opinion on this because it advises people to take Genesis as allegoric. In other words the Church encourages the use of reason.

The Catholic Church has no authority over the Word of God. They still use priests to intervene on our behalf, when Jesus is the High Priest. "There is one mediator between God and man, and that is Jesus."
So, the Catholic church is wrong on many fronts, including Genesis being allegoric. Genesis helps to lay out the genealogy of Christ, Jesus quotes Genesis as being literal, so it is in fact literal and it is to be taken as literal.

The Catholic Church encourages the use of reason. That is the only difference.
I am glad you belong to a denomination with no ministers, preachers, or anyone like that. Each religion is different.

I belong to a nondenominational church with a pastor that teaches verse by verse. All of the denominations are man made and not scriptural so I don't follow those teachings. I believe the Bible teaches that God has gifted Godly men with gifts of teaching and leading the church in local areas not part of a denomination; just teaching verse by verse the Word of God (the whole counsel).
If you belong to denomination or believe in their teachings, good for you, go with it. Anyway, don't want to debate, please tolerate my views.
