One of our priests talked briefly about purgatory.

The priest stated no one knows what is purgatory and that it is not clearly stated in the NT. But. do not forget that the Church was around before the NT. The CC is much more than the Bible and it includes Sacred Oral Tradition, traditions (with little t), Apostolic Succession, and the Magisterium of the Church.

No one knows how purgatory works. However, it is a needed step to prevent anyone that is not 100% free of sin to hang out with God. For example a very pious white person who is born again could harbor racist thoughts. A pit stop in purgatory would remove the racist attitude. That make take an instant, who knows? This is not that important. BTW, this is the first time I heard a priest talk about purgatory in my parish and I have been a member for 25 years. The only reason the priest made as passing comment was because of the

It is really no big deal, but it is used to solve a complex equation.

All Souls' Day is a day to pray for all souls. Among Catholics, prayers are offered for those in purgatory, waiting to get into heaven. On All Souls' Day, Catholic churches have a Book of the Dead, in which parishioners have an opportunity to write the names of relatives to be remembered. "That's placed near the altar," Donohoe said. "That's done all through November. It's an All Souls' tradition."

It is also part of the rich tradition of the church.

The days of using purgatory to get money from the parishioners belong to the middle ages. Anti Catholics love to use purgatory to insult the Church.

Purgatory is an illusion of Catholicism a manufactured dogma of a post death condition
that was fabricated by the church . Secondly, there is zero biblical evedence that inter-
cessory prayer can have any impact on the dead, Its religion at its highest order!

From 'gotquestions.org'

Question: "What does the Bible say about Purgatory?"

The very idea of Purgatory and the doctrines that are often attached to it (prayer for the dead, indulgences, meritorious works on behalf of the dead, etc.) all fail to recognize that Jesus’ death was sufficient to pay the penalty for ALL of our sins. Jesus, who was God incarnate (John 1:1,14), paid an infinite price for our sin. Jesus died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3).

Even though I'm not Catholic and even though the word purgatory is not in the bible, I'm inclined to believe there very well may be a place of refinement and punishment after death. Why? Because of the scripture where Jesus was preaching and warned people that if they did not repent they would not get out of prison until they paid to the "utter most farthing". Jesus did not "pay our penalty" -- he showed us the way to die in God's grace. The New Testament does not teach that one can be a hypocrite who names the name of Christ (yet hates his brothers) and not be in danger of judgement. I'm glad too because there is so much greed, inequity, and even people who despise the poor and oppressed in this world, yet still call themselves Christians, but they are self-deluded people who have judgement coming.

Yes, Jesus died for our sins but now we need to do our part by living a good life, not sit back and think we are home free.

I agree, but it solves an important question.

Purgatory was created to deal with an issue:

What to do with the impure people that die and want to go to heaven.

What to do with the white minister that is born again and is a nice preacher, but has racists thoughts. Should this guy hang out with God after his death. Does God tolerate racist people?

The problem is: this minister is not evil enough to go to hell.

What to do?

And this is religion and in religion anything goes. IN religion men live to be over 900 years of age, the world is created in 6 days, and very old women get pregnant, etc. SO why challenge religion?

If you are referring to works based salvation, the Bible flat out refutes that. (Ephesians 2:8,9; Titus 3:5). Works have a place in the believer's spiritual life, but they are not the means of obtaining eternal life. The moment one puts his faith in Christ Jesus he is eternally saved. He is eternally secure and cannot lose or walk away from his salvation.
