I've also read the didache and some of the ECF's writings, as well. I've read some of the gnostic writings, also.

Doesn't matter if you're Catholic or not. Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas is a must read for every Christian.

It's one thing to read them, and another to get some of the historical context.
A book available which I can't recommend enough is Patrology series by
Johannes Quasten.

All of these early books which did not get canonized could be read from a historical view of a fiction novel , especially if the believe is studying the Bible or preaching the word of God these books must be avoided and the ideas will cause confusion with Holy Spirit into the tolerances of the person ...........See these books never made it into the bible because there was questionable issues so they rejected them , and the people who canonized these books knew God
