I personally believe that Christianity is a successful religion mainly because it is a kind of Ultimate Conspiracy Theory. A significant portion of the population is attracted to conspiracy theories: think of all the 9-11 Truthers, Birthers, JFK theorists, and Black Helicopter people that are there out there.
So if you tell people that there is a Cosmic Conspiracy with Satan lurking in every dark place (and even in our own minds) trying to "get us" (in both the here and now and in eternity) many people will be attracted to that and take it seriously. "I can't prove Satan doesn't exist, so I better assume he does just in case!"
Fear and paranoia are powerful emotions. They helped us survive for millions of years. Unfortunately, humans have learned how to use these emotions to gain followers, money, power, and control.
I can see a movie version with Bill Murray, Dan Ayckroyd and a CGI Harold Ramis....
