This is a parable that conveys the spiritual position of those who fall out of God's favor. Eternal seperation from God is torment enough. I have never assumed that the 'fires' were supposed to be literal.
You may also assume that all rich people are inherently evil and will be going to Hell to burn forever.

If that happens, then who will run all those televangelist programs and other Mega-Churches ???

We can also assume that all poor people are basically as pure as the driven snow by virtue of the financial station in life and are deserving of everlasting life for no more than being poor. Must be all that tithing.

Will some be more eternally separated than others? - When Jesus spoke about the religious leaders in Matt 23:41 he said that they will receive the greater damnation.

Can you restate the scriipture please, so I can examine the context. I'm not showing there to be a 41st verse in Matt 23?

He meant that they are more guilty for leading others into their wrongdoing. But their portion would be the same as anyone else who is unrepentantly wicked. Death without hope of resurrection.

But he said they will receive the greater damnation. I don't think it is a good idea to take scripture and reword it to fit a belief - I believe that we need to base our beliefs on the scriptures and what they actually say.

When Jesus prayed "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". Did he mean that?

Exactly, the are doubly guilty so they receive no hope of resurrection. If you believe in hellfire and you think this is referring to that, what is the 'lesser damnation'?

I don't believe in hell fire as in a literal "hell" with literal flames however I do believe there will be judgement for people deeds - what you sow you shall reap - those that kill by the sword by the sword they will die - mercy to those that have shown mercy -

For the Jews 70AD was a very severe punishment for them.

In Luke 12:45 The servant that knew is masters will and did not obey will receive many stripes (with the unbelievers) but the one who did not know his masters will and deserves stripes will get few.

What does 1 Peter 4:6 mean?

What is up with , "I do or don't believe", it's what the bible says.
